empire state of mind

Because that song isn't over used or anything when talking about the Big Apple...

BUT y'all my sister was here this past weekend and not only was it her first time visiting BUT it was her first time flying too!! And she made it alive in one piece and didn't even miss her connection! We had so much fun! jam packed a lot of stuff in three days! Since it was SO jam packed and included TONS of walking... like 10 miles on Thursday and another 10 miles (including a 5k) on Saturday you're just going to have to enjoy the photographias.... because there are a lot of them!

A weekend full of firsts! First plane ride, first train ride to head into the city for the first time!

Sister's together.. first we headed over to the NBC store...

We visited St. Patricks Cathedral - we were going to light a candle for Avery but we weren't sure if that was sacrilegious since we're not catholic... But its the thought that counts right!?

we saw a man in a skirt while waiting in line to go to the top of the Rockefeller Center

we went to the Top of the Roc.. which I thought was just as cool as the Empire State building.. and you get better views of central park - it was SUPER cloudy though

We walked around Central Park in the rain... hellllooo pale New Yorker

we went to the Museum of Natural History - which I'm glad we didn't pay more than $5 to get in.. it was cool but so not as cool as it was in Night at the Museum...

but we did see...

some dude that we think was in an 80's hair band cover... or he just likes big hair, tight jeans and eye liner...

Then I took the sister to Times Square for the "real" New York experience..

where we saw a dancing drag queen...

After all that we were starving - and don't worry I took the sister to John's - our favorite pizza place in the city. But I have no pictures of this because I ate it too fast...

On Friday we went to Woodbury Commons in high hopes of shopping til we dropped but it was pouring rain so we ran from one store til the next until we decided it so wasn't worth it!

rain rain go away...

Then we sat in three hours of traffic coming home from LaGuardia where we picked up one of the hub's friends who was also visiting...

And we got to celebrate some very special little people's very first birthday!

happy birthday Libby and Laney!!!

Saturday morning the sis and I woke up bright and early to drive into the city to run the Miles for Hope 5k in Riverside Park. It was an absolutely beautiful day! After the rainy weather the past 3 days we couldn't have asked for more sunshine

We finished right at 34 minutes - which for not running a consecutive 3 miles in over a month - I'd say we did pretty good! I think I just might be getting back into a love/love relationship with running after this long love/hate relationship we've had going on..

Ater the 5k we met up with one of the sister's very best friends that we used to live right down the street from growing up - we ate brunch and explored Central Park a little more and had a fabulous time people watching. If NYC is good for absolutely nothing else - it provides some of the best people watching venues hands down. you really do see it all...

I had a great weekend and was so happy to see one of my peoples - since I probably won't be seeing any of my people again until 2013... it was nice to get that small taste of home!

I got my booty kicked..

At bootcamp...

I'll have to back track to last weekend eventually because the in laws were in town and I know you're all dying to hear all the fun and exciting things we did! And in approximately 72 hours my sister will be here!! She's never flown before so this should be good!

Okay but back to the hardest workout I've done in a realllyyy long time! We have some friends that go to church with us and he's a personal trainer and has a bootcamp class in our area. I've been talking with him and his wife and saying all the right things like oh yeah I really want to get in shape and I'd love to go blah blah blah... but let's be real sleep trumps working out every time. So I never really made the time to go, but for some reason this week I had friday night off and it seemed like a good idea. I wasn't super nervous, because hello I work out.. I don't look like I do by any means, but I promise I do. So I was pretty sure that I'd be able to handle a boot camp class even if it was a little more than I'm used to - then I start getting text messages like:

"Don't eat before you come so it doesn't hurt when you puke..."

Thanks.. now I'm excited...

So any who I got up at the crack of dawn on saturday morning - a time that I am not exactly accustomed to waking up at and got dressed and had myself a banana and chocolate protein bar and some water... and talked myself into what a great idea this was..

Before...

Michelle and I (her hubs is the one that teaches)
My self portrait skills need some work and I've also realized that I have an extremely unsteady hand at  7am

We did a quick warm up with some laps and push ups and squats and a couple of other things that I can't really remember and I was like okay that wasn't so bad... that was the warm up... It was a lot of circuit training - like jump roping (which I am terrible because I haven't jumped rope since elementary school and even then I wasn't good at it... won't be seeing me doing any double unders anytime soon!) and medicine ball push ups and squat throws or something like that and some ab work and then you start that circuit over. And we did a few different variations of circuits.

my medicine ball and kettle bell - I've never used one of those before - we used it for squats.

After an hour of this we were done. And in case you were wondering - I did not lose my breakfast! I was told that most people do their first time - luckily I know my body good enough not to push it to that extreme - kudos to the people that do push their body to that extreme but I really do hate to lose food that I took the time to eat and have to desire to push myself that hard. I still got a really good sweaty workout. Michelle thought she was a sweater - then I came along... people don't believe me when I tell them how bad I sweat until they witness it for themselves... it is a site to see.

After...

I apparently have an extremely unsteady hand after getting my booty kicked and I apparently sweated off all my make up - yes I get up to put make up on before I work out where other people are going to see me... it makes me feel better...

I slept so so good that afternoon before work. I also wasn't as sore as I thought I would be so I guess I could have pushed myself a little harder than I did. BUT seeing as how I am a few days late in posting this (sorry peeps need my zzz's) my elbows are sore!! More specifically what I believe to be my brachioradialis.. I'm not sure if it's from something I did at bootcamp or if maybe I slept funny but ouch!

I'm having trouble deciding if I want to jump on the bootcamp bandwagon OR the cross fit bandwagon... I really did enjoy the bootcamp though and I probably got a better workout than I have in a really long time.

And a bathroom update! It is painted!! For all you crafty people out there that find painting fun and easy.. I didn't have to do a thing - my in laws like that kind of stuff and who am I to deny them this joy!?

It is a nice pearly white instead of an ash gray...

Hope you're all having a great week so far - I thought it was tuesday all day yesterday then I remembered that yesterday was monday and today was tuesday and I still have one more shift standing between me and four glorious days off and fun in the city with my sister!!

Have you taken a bootcamp or cross fit class? Which did you like better??

Catch Up Time

We've been doing a whole lot of this lately...

and my bathroom still definitely looks like this...

because it's been like this like every day...

I really didn't think that June would be such a busy month - I thought we'd have time to relax and clean and blog more and all that fun stuff. But it kind of was and I kind of didn't...

Let's start off with some good news!! Our trip to Uganda is paid for and booked!! I am for reals going to Africa on September 22 and I am super excited. Not ready in the slightest bit but I am excited! God is so so good!! And more good news there is an organization called Afya in Yonkers (not too far from us) that has a warehouse of donated medical supplies/medications and for a donation you can bring your suitcase in and fill it to the 50lb weight limit with whatever you need! How awesome is that!? I'm super excited and hope that they have what we're looking for! AND people at work have been SO generous! I am beyond grateful for the people in my life and their support! And y'all too for listening to me talk about it and because I'm just going to keep on talking about it...

And if getting ready for an international mission trip (for the first time) isn't a little bit stressful.. I am going to be whipping out my favorite study buddies again for the next three months -

because I am going to be attempting to take the neonatal certification exam..

which just certifies me as a neonatal nurse and I get to add some letters behind my signature. Oh hey guess what day it is this year -  Friday September 21. Oh yes if you remember from the above paragraph I get on an airplane to fly across the atlantic ocean the very next day. Talk about stress. it's like I've forgotten how to study... I fall asleep every time I open the book up! Take me back to those all nighters at good ol' Strozier

Okay now that its getting late I can actually go run and maybe not die of heat of heat exhaustion -

Thank goodness for some Nuun to keep me hydrated!!

Today I think I'm going to try Jess' "out of the box" workout today -

800m
10 push ups
20 air squats
30 full sit ups
x6

That's 3 miles plus some x-training! I'll let you know if I die or not!
